2008   M60-64
This year is also off to a quick start. I had the distinct pleasure and honor to be one of 6 masters age group world record setters at the Reno Pole Vault Summit on January 4th, 2008. In February I no-heighted at a PV only competition. In March I won my first world championship competition.

This year my competition was at a good time; 6pm. The only problem was it overlapped the elite vaulting so I didn't get to watch much of it. There were 6 world records set, including me improving mine! Here is a photo of 5 of the world record vaulters that day.

This was my first international competition. Many thanks to Nordic Sport who loaned me poles. This made travel so much easier! But created the anxiety of jumping on new poles for the first time, and at a major competition. My warm ups went well and so did my first two jumps, making first 3.60m and then 3.80m (video links to the left) on my first attempts. I was caught off guard when my competition passed 3.90m and I had to make a quick decision whether to jump at 3.90 by myself or go directly to 4.00m. At that point I was winning the competition based on my first attempt make at 3.80 so I decided to pass and jump at 4.00. I was concerned that I might need to be on a bigger pole so my first two attempts I moved up a pole, but I wasn't ready for it. For my third attempt I dropped back down, but I still missed.
There were 3671 athletes from 65 countries participating in this 3rd World Indoor Championships. More details about participation and medal counts are here. I met several European vaulters and was especially pleased to meet Hans Lagerqvist of Sweden and Wolfgang Ritte (and family) of Germany. Some photos from the championships are available here. And if anyone is interested, there is video of the medal ceremony, complete with music. (music here) (medals awarded here).

It was overcast but warm enough. My run was strong and I adjusted my start point from 93' 6" to 94' 6". I started out using the Pacer FX 4.15 155 but soon moved to the 160. Unfortunately, I didn't move to the 165 to slow down my pole speed and on my 2nd and 3rd jumps at 12'6" I knocked the bar off going up on one, and with my forearm (after my body was over) on the other.
